Since 2011, we have conducted an educational program between Yokohama National University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University for international student exchange. This is a distinctive educational program by top universities in the field of naval architecture and ocean engineering. Technological research is explored to support global marine transportation in the field of naval architecture and ocean resource development and marine energy utilization in the world are studied in the ocean engineering field. Since these fields are for the worldwide applications, human resources with a global perspective are highly demanded. To this end, the program is implemented with the support from the Exchange Support Program of the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) and the support from both Yokohama National University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
As one of the dispatch programs (Yokohama National University ⇒ Shanghai Jiao Tong University), the short-term academic exchange program dispatches 10 students to the Summer School held by Shanghai Jiao Tong University every year for about two weeks in late July. Not only from Yokohama National University but also international students from China, India, Pakistan, Russia, South Korea and others participate in the Summer School. The Summer School offers lectures, presentations, seminars, company tours, laboratory tours and so on. The other short internship program sends three students to Shanghai Jiao Tong University every year for three months from October to December. Students are assigned to the local laboratories to carry out a specific research and make a research presentation and submit a report at the end of the period.
On the other hand, the acceptance program (Shanghai Jiao Tong University ⇒ Yokohama National University) accepts 10 students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University for about two weeks as a short-term academic exchange program. They attend the Winter School hosted by Yokohama National University every February. A total of about 20 students from China (Dalian University of Technology), Brazil (Sao Paulo University, Pernambuco University), and Vietnam (Da Nang University) in addition to Shanghai Jiao Tong University participate in the Winter School every year. The Winter School offers lectures, student sessions, seminars, company tours, laboratory tours and so on. The short internship program accepts three students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University for three months from December to February. They are assigned to the laboratories in YNU to carry out a specific research, present their research results and submit a report at the end of the period. Examples of research themes in 2019 were as follows:
- Flow Simulation of a Bulk Carrier Based on Generalized K-Omega Model
- Numerical Investigation of Breaking Criteria and Effects of Large Amplitude Irregular Waves
- Study On Time Domain Numerical Simulation for Ship Surf-riding and Broaching
- Study on the Required Section Modulus/Plastic Section Modulus for Asymmetric Stiffener based on FEA Model
- Uncertainty Analysis for Ultimate Strength of Stiffened Plate Using Finite Element Method
- Estimation of External Loads along the Statically Determinate Beam Using Sparse Modeling
- A Study on the Cavitation of INSEAN E779A Propeller
- Numerical Solution and Analysis of OWC Models Added Mass and Damping
