Since 2005, we have been conducting fieldwork in the Philippines for about 10-14 days every year as a part of our program. The contents and itinerary of the fieldwork have been planned by students interested in economic diplomacy and sustainable development. The program also includes joint seminars/workshops with the University of the Philippines Diliman and the University of Santo Tomas, interviews with international organizations, and site visits. Its purpose is to develop human resources who can understand and communicate with different cultures, as well as global literacy based on the basics of specialized subjects and expertise, and can appropriately respond to the various challenges they face. Although the program was initially offered only to graduate students, it was open to undergraduate students in 2014. We also built a consortium with Ferris University and Wayo Women’s University to create a system for highly motivated students to study together in 2018. Our university is the representative school of this consortium.
The fieldwork that took place from February 19 to March 1, 2020, focused on the theme “Markets and Public Spaces for Education, Environment, and Investment.” Students interviewed government ministries and agencies of the Republic of the Philippines, the Asian Development Bank, JETRO Manila office and NGOs as well as the university researchers. They also visited Banaue, Ifugao to learn about traditional societies and land issues. At the joint workshop at University of the Philippines, Diliman, one of our partner universities, undergraduate students of our university had a presentation on Japanese subculture, and, at the seminar at University of Santo Tomas, a student of our graduate school presented her research and analysis.
